Tours to the local history of Rautavaara and its surrounding areas
Rautavaara offers a lot to see and experience for all the native region devotees. Kestitupa has interesting tours varying from couple hours to a day to these historic attractions. Good example is a penal colony in Ylä-Luosta. It was built 1860's but its remains and the horrible fate of its inmates touches us still.
Family Roininen had to live with the Russian army when they built their defenses from 1915 to 1917.
Logging and log-rafting employed anybody capable from the area in the early 1900's. There are many interesting stories and pictures to be shared from that era. We could arrange a tour of the logging places or an evening slideshow.
We could also tour the downtown Rautavaara and bring few old pictures with us to demonstrate how tough life was during the terrible Winter War. The airport of Rautavaara was built during that time and the old remains are still visible.
We also offer trips through the memory lane by showing a slideshow. We organize evenings hosted by an expert to reminisce about the old times. If you have a particular topic in mind that you would love to hear about, let us know!
Other interesting native region attractions: • Burn clearing museum in Telkkämäki (photos at right) • House museum in Murtovaara • Old time iron refinement
Life after the war in Rautavaara: Interesting radio program from 1950.
